Hospital leaders from Austria visit St. Erik Eye Hospital

Hospital directors from Austria visited St. Erik Eye Hospital to learn more about the hospital’s approach to healthcare, research and leadership in ophthalmology, in a visit marked by active dialogue and thoughtful questions.

The visit brought together hospital directors from Upper Austria and representatives from St. Erik Eye Hospital for discussions on how specialised eye care can be developed through close integration of clinical practice and research.

Sten Kjellström, CEO of St. Erik Eye Hospital and Gauti Jóhannesson, CMO, presented St. Erik Eye Hospital long-term vision for eye care and how research is embedded in day-to-day clinical work.

– International collaboration and exchange are important for the development of life science and eye care. St. Erik Eye Hospital is proud to share experiences from Swedish ophthalmology and grateful to have had rewarding discussions with representatives from Upper Austria, said Sten Kjellström.

A central theme of the visit was trust-based leadership and the ambition to organise services around the patient journey, with care pathways designed to strengthen coordination and provide appropriate care closer to the patient.

International collaboration was highlighted as an important enabler for this development. Through membership in the World Association of Eye Hospitals (WAEH), St. Erik Eye Hospital exchanges knowledge and experience with eye hospitals worldwide to support improvements in clinical outcomes, patient experience and efficiency.

The programme included a guided tour of St. Erik Eye Hospital, including operating theatres and the central sterile services department.

The visit was part of a three-day strategic exchange between Sweden and Austria.
